Aloha! The Tokai University – West Oahu campus is located in Ewa on the island of Oahu and consists of four campus buildings; a two-story classroom building, two-story dormitory building, one story multi-purpose building, and one-story maintenance building. The structural systems for all four buildings are slightly different—the classroom building uses a composite structural steel gravity framing system and an ordinary concrete masonry unit (CMU) shear wall lateral system. T…he dormitory building uses a light-gage steel joist and combination of light-gage and CMU bearing wall gravity system and an ordinary CMU shear wall lateral system. The multi-purpose building uses structural steel trusses with CMU bearing wall gravity system and an ordinary CMU shear wall lateral system. The maintenance building uses design-build light-gage steel trusses with CMU bearing wall gravity system and an ordinary CMU shear wall lateral system. The design of the CMU bearing and shear walls was tricky due to the numerous window, door, clerestory, etc. openings, and CMU beams of many different geometries were used, including a 58’ long sloped beam at the multi-purpose building. We are honored to contribute to such a beautiful campus in such a beautiful place. Aloha!
