Hello there and welcome to the Career Path section of our website. My name is Greg Bowser and I have worked as an engineer at The Englekirk Companies for just shy of two years. I would like to take a few moments to talk about the many wonderful facets of being an employee here at The Englekirk Companies - especially for a new engineer seeking employment after college.
After graduating in 2005 I was faced with the daunting task of not only finding a job, but also finding one that would be the best for my personal and professional development. I interviewed at many different engineering firms with mixed impressions. These firms ranged from multi-national corporations to small private firms. I eventually settled on The
Englekirk Companies and in the nearly two years that I have been working here have never second-guessed that decision.
From the start I was thrown into a whole variety of projects spanning every type of structure and building system. At larger companies it is common to be "key-holed" into one particular task, but at The Englekirk Companies professional development in all common types of construction (steel, reinforced concrete, post-tensioned and prestressed concrete, wood, masonry, etc.), is encouraged in a learning-by-doing environment. I feel that being exposed to such widespread project experience has helped me become more confident in my designs and has allowed me to see a much broader design picture.
My development as an engineer can be seen in the projects I have assisted project engineers on and also in the fact that now, even in my short stay at The Englekirk Companies, I have participated in countless projects through all phases of the design process and even have a couple of buildings where I can say "I designed that building." The Project Engineers and Senior Project Engineers do a fantastic job of instilling the necessary tools in the younger engineers. So much so, that after a relatively short period our engineers are working on their own projects.
In addition to the professional environment, the overall work environment is outstanding. The dynamic of our employees extends from the drawing board to the lunch room. The Englekirk Company employees are extremely friendly, welcoming, and just generally good people. We have a very diverse workplace which brings about all sorts of experiences and cultures which meld into a sort of microcosm of the vibrant city of Los Angeles itself.
Similar to the interpersonal relationships, relationships with the partners of the company are very strong. The partners are fantastic resources of knowledge who are all very approachable and readily available. They also make a great effort to show appreciation for your work and often show this with happy hours, potlucks, afternoon snacks, bowling trips, and all sorts of other activities.
In summary, The Englekirk Companies is a wonderful place to work and learn. As an Englekirk employee you will look forward to each task you undertake and learn to appreciate how wonderful it is to work for The Englekirk Companies.
