The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) is a steel frame, mixed-use complex including restaurant and retail on the ground floor and multi-discipline school functions for the floors above. The ground floor for the Institute is a designated area designed for television and video production. The vibration characteristics of the structural framing supporting this production area was carefully evaluated for the heel drop impact of the surrounding pedestrian activities. Special structural design considerations were made to accommodate the architectural/ decorative elements of the south end of the structure which steps back to create floor level areas for outdoor activities. These areas are articulated by a combination of cantilevered features and
cable suspended awning. The roof of the structure consists of a combination of barrel vaults, pitched roof and dome elements. Use of different shaped elements, incorporated with clerestory, provide a high ceiling effect to the class-rooms below while maximizing the natural lighting to the Institute.
