Rio Hondo Student Services Center
Rio Hondo Community College
Whittier, California

3 stories
26,300 square feet

The Student Services Center on the Rio Hondo College campus is a steel 3-story building. The gravity framing consists of metal deck filled with concrete slabs, steel beams and steel columns. Light-weight concrete is used for the metal deck fill at the typical office levels. Steel floor framing was selected because it allows the greatest flexibility for tenant modifications such as new tenant stairs, floor penetrations, and floor strengthening. Another structural advantage gained by using a steel framing scheme is that it ensures a minimal building mass, which will allow for minimal seismic lateral forces. The towers lateral framing system consists of Steel Eccentric Braced Frames (EBF).
