50 meter Olympic size pool

The Kamehameha Schools/ Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate Swimming Pool Renovation project at the school's main Honolulu campus consisted of the expansion of an existing pool to a 50 meter Olympic-sized pool that could also be used to play water polo and rebuilding 1000 bleacher seats.

The existing pool built in the early 60's is sited on the side of a hill with the downhill portion of the pool bottom a suspended structure on grade. Rather than a complete rebuild it was determined that this massive renovation was more economical. During preliminary studies it was determined that the complete removal of the existing bleachers (which needed more capacity) and the expansion of the pool on the uphill side was more feasible than other alternatives.

To achieve the desired swimming pool dimensions two sides and part of a third side of the pool (along with portions of the pool bottom) and all of the existing bleachers were demolished; then the new pool, walls, pool bottom and bleachers were constructed in their place. The challenge was to select a solution that could be sequentially constructed, as site access was extremely limited.
