Seismic Study Los Angeles, California
As a follow-on to the original UCLA Seismic Study, we reviewed 10 buildings comprising the Center for the Health Sciences. The 2 million square feet of building area include highrise and midrise concrete and steel hospital, outpatient, and research facilities. We considered conventional rehabilitation schemes as well as seismic isolation alternatives. Selected facilities were evaluated for continuous operation following a large earthquake. In addition to structural and non-structural
concerns, we also reviewed lifelines serving the CHS including water, electric power, telephone, natural gas, and sewer. Construction budget estimates were prepared to assist Campus Administrators in developing workable solutions to the logistical problems inherent in rehabilitating an operating teaching hospital.
