This new medical research lab contains wet labs, lab support spaces, a vivarium, offices and conference room spaces. We were particularly challenged by the inclusion of a 239-seat auditorium within the footprint of the building requiring the use of a long span framing system and transfer girders. We used 6-levels of structural steel construction, special seismic frames, perimeter basement
concrete shear walls and exterior brick veneer system. Other special structural challenges included tall floors (16’), tall roof parapets (27’) for coverage of the extensive mechanical equipment; a concrete tunnel to connect to an adjacent building; architectural feature grand stair and stringent vibration analysis and design for the sensitive laboratory equipment.
