The Molokai Ranch Lodge complex consists of a number of structures. The principle structures are the Main Building containing 30,000 SF and six guest rooms; and two sleeping cottages containing 6,000 SF each and eight guest rooms each.
This is a Type V 1-hour all wood framed structure.
The main building has two-stories with a basement and the cottages are two-stories. Architecturally, this complex was conceived as a "Ranch Style" building to complement Molokai Ranch's visitor program, which consists of activities such as horseback riding, rodeos, trail biking and their camping program. This is one of Hawaii's first attempts at "eco-tourism."
Our challenge was to frame a complicated architectural expression "cheaply" as the budget was low. We selected an all-timber solution using "Trus Joist" floors, glue-laminated beams, and a prefabricated wood truss roof.
The lateral load systems consist of plywood shear walls until you encounter the two-story great room over looking the view - a steel frame was used here to preserve the views.
