The Carlyle is a 285,000 square foot, 23-story residential tower with four stories of below grade parking. The building is located in the Westwood area of Los Angeles, California. The above-grade height of the tower is approximately 280 feet to the top of the penthouse roof (23rd level). The analysis and design of the building was based on an alternate design procedure permitted by the LACBC 1631.6.
The provision allows the confirmation of a design by a series of inelastic time history analyses and requires a peer review. A nonlinear time history response analysis, using ground motions corresponding to a 2475-year return period (MCE 2% in 50 years), was performed in accordance with the procedure approved by a peer review committee.
