9 story, 220,000 sf, 324 room hotel
20,000 sf conference center
2 level, 400 car parking structure
This unique luxury hotel consists of a 324 room, 9 level building with an attached 20,000 square foot Conference Center which utilizes a post-tensioned slab with concrete ductile frames. The use of the ductile frames eliminated the need for concrete shear walls and produced an open space hotel lobby.
The site for this hotel and detached two level garage is at the waters edge along the San Francisco Bay. Unconsolidated bay mud with settlement potential of up to 12 inches surround the site. We worked closely with the contractor to develop the systems for each building which allowed the contractor to reduce the estimated construction time of 16 months by 1 1/2 months. For the hotel, a pile foundation was utilized, with the slab on grade being a structural slab. All underground utilities were
articulated with slip and flex couplings, and all approach slabs were hinged to allow the settlement to occur without architectural problems. For the parking structure, we selected a spread footing system that was designed and tuned to produce settlements within tolerable structural ranges which avoided the use of costly pile foundations. The Hotel Sofitel experienced no damage as a result of the Loma Prieta Earthquake.
