The Bakersfield Amtrak Station serves as part of Bakersfield’s multi-model transportation system by connecting trains, busses, and cars. The station consists of a high-bay waiting area for the public and a back-of-house section for station operations, baggage handling and ticket sales. One structural challenge was designing an exposed system of roof framing and seismic braces to help maximize the tall, open space feeling of the waiting area. Another challenge was the structural design of a skylight down the ridge of the building that separates the diaphragm. Stone veneer and dramatic roof shapes make this a unique structure in Bakersfield.
