A major retail entertainment development surrounding the Mann’s Chinese Theater, covering approximately four square blocks, has been completed in Hollywood, California. The project is Hollywood & Highland and will become the permanent home of the Academy Awards in the 3300-seat Kodak Theater. Reclaiming Hollywood as an entertainment destination, the project includes 640,000 square feet of retail, restaurants, broadcast studios, multiplex cinema, and a live theater over 6 levels of parking for 3000 cars. A hospitality component of the complex includes the renovation and expansion of an existing 22-story hotel, which will provide 640 rooms. Unique to this project is the innovative design of a structural system integrating precast concrete below grade and precast concrete with structural steel above grade. The use of precast concrete enabled the fast track project to meet its difficult schedule. Critical to the success of Hollywood & Highland was our ability to tie into an existing Metro Transit Authority underground subway station, deal with an existing tight and highly developed urban site and the coordination between multiple architectural and construction firms.
