The $157 million face lift to an existing urban mall represented a much needed revitalization to the Sacramento area where two-thirds of its 1.5 million residents live within 15 miles of the development. Converting the Downtown Plaza to two-levels, the addition included 230,000 square feet of new mall. The architectural rotunda and festival-type bazaar atmosphere required our close coordination with the architect and contractor since a portion of the construction occurred over the existing open mall and subterranean parking structure. The structural design of the new structure was complicated having
to construct over seven different buildings built at various times in the past. The existing structure under the new mall included a roadway overpass and structures built with a variety of materials and construction types such as post-tensioned beams and slabs, concrete pan joists, and steel beams.
