This unique mall renovation features a vertical expansion method which reduced the height of the new second level to a point which was below the existing roof. A second level was added to the existing one story mall, while the tenants remained in business. Steel pipe piles were driven through openings in the existing roof which extended 40 feet below grade. Columns were dropped through these same roof openings and the new second level roof, supported by 93 foot long supertrusses at 31’-6” on center, was built above the existing roof. This provided a weather tight enclosure for the rest of the construction period. The existing roof structure was then removed and the second level was hung from the
supertrusses at an elevation below the original roof line. This allowed the new second floor to be at the same elevation (19’-0” above grade) as the existing 2-story majors — a transformation into a state of the art retail facility serving the Riverside community.
