The Ontario Mills, a 1.7 million square foot, discount oriented outlet center, is part of a 2.5 million square foot development located at the intersection of Interstates 5 and 15 in the City of Ontario. The largest retail project of its type built in the country for the year, Ontario Mills includes 15 anchor and major stores, 200 specialty stores, a food court and multi-screen movie theater. The exterior of the mall combines several styles depicting the history of the Ontario community while the interior emulates garden-like courts with overhead skylights throughout. High seismic resistance and ductility was achieved through the use of steel eccentric braced frames. These frames, while possessing high stiffness inherent in braced frames also possess excellent post elastic behavior during an earthquake. Frames were judiciously placed to minimize drifts and maximize redundancy. Close coordination with the contractor reduced the preliminary structural steel budget by $0.50 per square foot. |
