In the early 1980's, UCLA commissioned a seismic study that forecast campus-wide rehabilitation costs in excess of $500 million. Faced with this financially impossible burden, no rehabilitation work was undertaken. In the late 1980's, our firm was retained to analyze nearly 40 campus buildings, including the UCLA School of Law to determine if a more realistic performance criterion would result in a financially and politically acceptable program.
The existing School of Law, a brick masonry structure constructed in the early 1950's, was found to lack sufficient strength and ductility to resist the anticipated earthquake loads. Based on these findings, we recommended a cost-effective strengthening program for the building that is being incorporated into the anticipated addition of the School's library.
