Our firm seismically strengthened this ornately detailed, high-rise, brass-roofed landmark building in Long Beach using an innovative masonry shear wall design. The new shear walls possessed high ductility with the inclusion of Seismic Confinement Combs that were developed by our firm under a National Science Foundation Small Business Innovative Research Grant. Detailed evaluation of the existing structure's inherent strength permitted us to identify the most significant seismic deficiencies and limited the amount of rehabilitation work required. The seismic work was performed while the building was fully occupied, further reducing the actual cost of the project.
