The Wilshire Hauser project is a mixed-use development located in the art deco, historical area of the Wilshire District. Our firm was retained at the planning stages of the project to provide wind input for the overall environmental impact report. The objective was to evaluate the wind impact of the proposed project on the local wind flow environment, e.g. at pedestrian and outdoor use areas, plazas and building entrances. Hourly wind speed data recorded at several nearby wind recording stations was analyzed to establish the average daily wind speed and direction at the site. Scaled models of the proposed development and buildings and structures within several blocks of the development were constructed for wind tunnel testing. Two sets of wind tunnel tests were performed, one in the
existing configuration, i.e. without the proposed development, and the other in the proposed configuration. When the expected wind environment in the proposed configuration was compared with those of the existing configuration, it was clear that the proposed development would not make the situation any worse than what exists. In fact, at some locations the proposed development was found to improve the wind condition. Probable mitigating measures were also proposed.
